The small desk behind Loonpointplay
Loonpointplay started with a group chat and a running argument about whether Andorra borders Portugal. It does not, and settling the matter sent several of us down a long rabbit hole of map quizzes and daily puzzles that we never quite climbed out of. The site is what we built from the notes.
We are a handful of editors spread across Canada, from the Maritimes to the West Coast, who share a slightly obsessive love of maps. Some of us teach, some of us travel for work, and all of us have, at some point, stayed up too late trying to beat a personal record on a capitals quiz.
Every game here has been played properly, daily, for weeks, on whatever devices we had to hand. We score what we experienced and we name what grated as clearly as what delighted us. A ranking is an opinion, argued carefully, and we revise it whenever a game changes enough to matter.
Our guide, Lachlan, is a loon with a compass and strong opinions about the Caucasus. You will find him on every page, nudging you toward a game that fits your mood.
Learning outranks polish
We care first about whether a game leaves you knowing more about the world. A plain quiz that teaches will always beat a beautiful one that only entertains, and our scores say so openly.
The free player is our reader
We judge each game by what someone gets without paying, then describe what a subscription adds. If the best part of a game sits behind a membership, we say so in plain words.
Facts we can stand behind
We describe only features we have played or confirmed from a game’s own pages. When we are unsure of a detail, we leave it out rather than guess, and we welcome corrections from readers.
